"Only X left in stock" is one of the most effective lines on a product page, on one condition: it has to be true. Here's how to add a low stock counter on Shopify and show stock quantity on the product page in a way that actually helps shoppers, without slipping into fake urgency.
Why showing remaining stock drives sales
A hesitant shopper often puts off the decision. Knowing there are only a few left in their size changes the math: waiting means risking missing out. That isn't manipulation; it's information they would have wanted anyway.
On the other hand, a made-up counter ("Only 2 left!" shown permanently) gets spotted quickly, and undermines trust in everything else on the page.
The golden rule: real stock, per variant
- Stock for the selected variant, not the whole product: you may have 40 T-shirts in total and only one in Medium.
- Updated when the shopper changes size or color, without reloading the page.
- Read from Shopify, where your fulfillment updates quantities, so the message keeps up with sales.
Set thresholds instead of a single message
The same message makes no sense at 50 units and at 2. Work with ranges:
| Variant stock | Message |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | 🔥 Only 3 left in stock, going fast! |
| 4 to 10 | Low stock |
| Above | Nothing: there's no urgency to announce |
Insert the real quantity into the text instead of a hard-coded number: "Only {qty} left in stock" shows "Only 3" or "Only 2" depending on the variant. If two ranges overlap, you need a clear rule to decide which one displays, such as a priority.
Mistakes to avoid with an "only X left in stock" message
- Showing urgency everywhere: if every product is "almost gone," none of them are.
- Leaving the badge on a sold-out product: "Only 0 left in stock" tells the shopper nothing useful. When an item is out of stock, announce when it's coming back or offer a back in stock alert instead.
- Faking scarcity: on top of damaging trust, a false stock claim can be considered a deceptive practice under consumer protection law.
- Picking a color that clashes with your theme: the badge should catch the eye without looking like an ad.
How to add a low stock counter on Shopify
Some themes show a generic "Low stock" label that's rarely customizable. For your own thresholds, messages, and colors, you need an app with a theme block.
The Urgency Stock Badge module of Delivery Countdown & Drop works with rules: a stock range, a message with {qty}, an emoji, a color. The badge reads the stock of the selected variant, updates when the size changes, and stays hidden when the product is sold out. Full details are in the documentation.
