A shopper who hits "Sold out" leaves, and nothing brings them back when the item is restocked. A back in stock alert on Shopify lets them leave their email with a "notify me when available" form and hear from you the day their size returns. Here's how to set up restock notifications the right way.
What a dead-end "Sold out" costs you
A sold-out product is often a product people love. Visitors who land on its page are already halfway there: they've made their choice. With no way to raise their hand, they go to a competitor or simply forget. When the restock arrives, you have no one to tell.
An alert turns that stockout into a waitlist: customers who told you themselves that they want this product, in this size.
What makes a good back in stock alert
Per variant, not per product
The customer waiting for a Medium doesn't care that the Large is back. The alert should be tied to the selected variant, and the "notify me when available" form should only appear on variants that are sold out.
Clear consent
The form should say exactly what the customer is signing up for: this restock, and nothing else. Quietly adding the address to your newsletter goes against privacy laws such as GDPR and will cost you the trust you just earned. If you want to offer the newsletter, use a separate checkbox.
One email, at the right moment
The restock notification goes out when stock is actually back and purchasable, not when you log an incoming shipment. One message per sign-up, with an unsubscribe link. A customer notified three times for the same item unsubscribes, or worse, marks the message as spam.
An email that goes straight to the product
The product name, the variant they were waiting for, and a button that opens the product page with that variant selected. No detour through the homepage: every extra click loses buyers.
What to track
- Pending subscribers, per product: a valuable demand signal for your purchase orders.
- Customers notified and the click rate: they tell you whether the email is doing its job. Keep in mind that some email providers open links automatically to scan them, so treat the rate as a ballpark figure.
- Failed sends, with the reason: an invalid address isn't an email you lost through your own fault.
The subscriber list belongs to you. Make sure you can export it, for example to decide which products to reorder first.
Taking it further: the drop
If you restock in waves, the alert gets more powerful when paired with an announced date: the product page shows a countdown, and subscribers are notified the moment sales open. That's the idea behind a product drop.
How to add back in stock alerts on Shopify
Shopify doesn't offer a "notify me" form on the online store out of the box: you need an app. The Drop module of Delivery Countdown & Drop includes one: a theme block that only appears on sold-out variants of the products you track, a single email sent when stock comes back, subscriber and click tracking, and CSV export. Full details are in the documentation.
