A product drop on Shopify is a release announced in advance, at a specific date and time. Done well, a launch countdown timer turns a simple restock into an event people wait for. Done badly, the drop opens too early, too late, or at 6 a.m. because someone had to get up to publish it. Here's how to run a drop, and a restock countdown, on Shopify.
Why turn a restock into an event
A product that comes back quietly gets bought by whoever happens to stop by. A product that comes back on an announced date is anticipated: customers return to the product page, talk about it, and are ready to buy the moment it opens. Stock sells through faster, and you know ahead of time whether the demand is there.
The problem with product drops on Shopify
By default, a product becomes purchasable as soon as its inventory is above zero. That causes two problems:
- Stock arrives before the announced date: the moment it's entered, a few visitors buy ahead of everyone else, and the drop loses its point.
- The release time is inconvenient: someone has to publish by hand, at exactly the right moment, without mistakes.
So you need to be able to lock sales on a product that's in stock, show that it's coming, and reopen automatically at the set time.
Two ways to run a drop
Drop without countdown
The product is sold out. As soon as stock comes back, sales reopen and subscribed customers are notified. Simple, and a good fit for regular restocks without an announcement.
Drop with countdown
The stock is there, but sales stay closed. The product page shows a launch countdown timer until the date you chose; when it hits zero, sales open and the alerts go out at the same time.
What the shopper sees
How to prepare a drop, step by step
- Pick a realistic date: when the stock will actually be available and your team ready to ship.
- Put the product page on hold: countdown visible, buy button locked, a message that tells shoppers when to come back.
- Open a waitlist: a "notify me" form collects interested customers until launch. See our guide on back in stock alerts.
- Announce the date: social media, email, the product page itself. Sharing the product link is enough; the countdown does the rest.
- On launch day: sales open on their own and subscribers are notified at the same moment. You watch your sales, not the clock.
Restock countdown best practices
- An honest countdown: the date shown has to be the real one. A timer that resets or fake scarcity damages trust and can be considered a misleading commercial practice under consumer protection law.
- A short message under the countdown: what the shopper should do now (pick their size, sign up for the alert).
- Check the time zone: "midnight" should be your store's midnight, not the visitor's.
- Stay in control: you should be able to move up, push back, or cancel a drop without reconfiguring everything.
How to run a product drop on Shopify
The Drop module of Delivery Countdown & Drop offers both modes. You choose the products, the release date product by product or a default duration, and the look of the banner. Back in stock alerts are included. Full details are in the documentation.
